#What Difference Does İt MakeJustice Minister Cemil Cicek has expressed frusteration with the official Danish stance towards the presence of PKK-linked Roj TV in Denmark. Speaking about the recent incident in Denmark which resulted in Prime Minister Erdogan abandoning a joint press conference with Danish Prime Minister Rasmussen, Cicek noted that it was unacceptable for Denmark to simultaneously accept the PKK as a terrorist organization, but not make any moves to shut down Roj TV, which openly supports the PKK.
It is a tough economy, but if President Barack Obama has $2 to invest in Turkey, I would suggest that he put one buck into consolidating Turkey’s liberal democracy, and the other into moving forward the country’s European Union accession, for a non-European Turkey would be a big loss for Washington.
"This opportunity should not be missed" is what we still hear and it is still valid. There has never been a better time to wipe out the PKK terror and progress in the Kurdish issue. For the first time those in Ankara holding the power and those in Çankaya are of the same opinion. They do not look in a different direction. No difference in opinion. And again for the first time is the command level in the TSK generally in line with the govenment, even if not in details. They believe that a step needs to be taken in order to wipe out the PKK terror.
In old town Damascus, there are coffee shops similar to those in Dolapdere of Istanbul, where men gather over coffee, cigarettes and nargile/shisha. They do not only socialize but do the usual men’s talk, too, be it football or politics, which in the latter case they embrace or resent their leaders’ choices.
ISTANBUL - Even though a new report from a Sweden-based think tank shows Turkey falling back from Greece in terms of weapons imports, weapons stocks continue to grow on both sides of the Aegean Sea, with Turkey relying more on domestic manufacturers rather than overseas suppliers
MARDİN - Mardin is asking how anyone could kill 44 of their relatives in cold blood, as many try to understand it by saying it is an inhuman fluke that should never have happened. Mardin’s elders believe nothing they can do will bring the family back together and in a region known for blood feuds, many fear that those who died will be just the first of many to come
ISTANBUL -The Turkish intelligentsia erupted in commotion when he suggested Turkey needs a "Second Republic." Some celebrate him as an economic genius who supports unconditional democracy. Others, however, deride him for once abandoning his ideals to accommodate "political realities" at the time.
ISTANBUL-One word: Approachable. US President Barack Obama speaks with Turkish university students and answers their questions in an intimate town hall-style meeting during his second day in Istanbul. ’This attitude is something a Turk is not used to,’ one student says
Everyone has focused on the Fatah-Hamas split in the Palestinian national unity, geographic division in the West-Bank and Gaza and the polarization of the Arab world. No one noticed a similar political break-up in Israel. The Israeli election results revealed the deep split in the electorate.
Why does the Turkish Prime Minister pay so much attention to Istanbul, particularly to main opposition Republican People's Party's (CHP) Istanbul mayoral candidate, Kemal Kilicdaroglu, ahead of the upcoming March bi-elections? I put this question to Gursel Tekin, the CHP's Istanbul provincial chairman; his response was very biting:
ISTANBUL - They dare to take on absolute darkness, enter through holes that would be any claustrophobic's worst nightmare, just to feel the experience of being the first ones to enter an unexplored cave. However, despite their bravery, the members of Boğaziçi University Speleological Society, or BÜMAK, are not in it for the glory.
There is big difference between Turkey and America in terms of political culture. Unlike his American counterpart, Turkish PM can simply wake up, read something in the paper, feel annoyed about it, and then comment on it directly to the media without much calculation.
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s obvious attitude in his statements regarding Israel’s attacks on Gaza has become one of the most criticized topics of his foreign policy during his tenure. It is apparent that this attitude will be a key reference in view of Turkey’s foreign politics in the new period, the shaping of beliefs therein and the perception of the Justice and Development Party, or AKP, in the world.
