ISTANBUL - ’Almanac Turkey 2006-2008: Security Sector and Democratic Oversight’ focuses on information about the security sector as a whole in Turkey and aims to accumulate information for civilian surveillance of the sector. Funded partially by the European Commission, the almanac includes an extensive scan of documents and legislation.

ISTANBUL - As the Central Bank hints that the latest interest rate cut in June may be the last one, banking sector’s profitability may be negatively impacted. With 5 billion liras in profits in the first quarter, banks are expected to obtain less revenue from Treasury securities they hold in the second quarter.

Turkey’s GDP slid almost 14 percent, the biggest quarterly slump in at least 60 years, a number dwarfing the government’s official forecast of a 3.6 percent contraction this year.

ANKARA - More than 30 percent of the poorest people of working age do not have any kind of health coverage and nearly 20 percent of the entire population has no coverage. The future of a program that provides access to health care for the poorest strata of society is being pondered.
