WIMBLEDON - Serena Williams has advanced to the fourth round at Wimbledon by beating Roberta Vinci of Italy 6-3, 6-4.
Williams is bidding for her third Wimbledon title and her first since 2003. She hit 10 aces Friday, including one on match point. Williams won for the 172nd time in 200 Grand Slam matches. The only other woman to play so many matches in major tournaments is her sister Venus Williams (219). Meanwhile, seventh-seeded Vera Zvonareva of Russia has pulled out of Wimbledon because of an ankle injury.
Zvonareva was set to play No. 26 Virginie Razzano of France in the third round Friday but pulled out before the match.
Razzano will next play the winner between No. 12 Marion Bartoli of France and Francesca Schiavone of Italy.
Also Friday, Japan's Ai Sugiyama was knocked out by her doubles partner Daniela Hantuchova in a 6-4, 6-3 defeat. The Slovak world number 32 wrapped up victory over the veteran in one hour, 36 minutes on Court 18.
