#Everybody Wants SomeANKARA - The notorious image of the United States appears to have damaged the reliable image and appealing aura of U.S. President Barack Obama in Turkey. According to a survey published in June by the Ankara-based research company MetroPOLL Strategic and Social Research Center, Obama is the world leader most appreciated by Turks, but a majority finds him not reliable.
Cruising on the highway between Ankara and Istanbul you can read all funny things written at the back of the lorries. As I was sick and tired of that debate about cleansing mines that are planted along Turkey's southeastern border, my spirits rose on the Istanbul highway when confronted by the lorry drivers' jargon. An example:
Last month interesting winds were blowing in respect to the relationship between Turkey and the European Union. On one side there were statements by Sarkozy and Merkel that attracted reactions in Turkey and on the other side news stirring from other EU members and the commission.
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is a man full of surprises. He surprised the world four months ago in Davos by bashing Israeli President Shimon Peres for "killing children" in Gaza. The way he stormed the international forum came as a relief to most Middle Easterners, but raised eyebrows among many Westerners.
BRUSSELS -The new US strategy toward Afghanistan bolsters the current understanding of the situation among NATO member states and pleases Turkey, which has said since the beginning that security and stability in Afghanistan cannot be maintained through military measures only. The first signs of the new US strategy were seen at NATO summit
BODRUM - A group of scientists from Akdeniz University starts research in Nazilli, where the elderly population lives longer than the European average. Twenty-three out of 100 people are above 60 years of age in the western town, which looks to invest in this healthy image
FETHİYE - A seaside fish market without any locally-caught fish for sale would be a pretty abysmal sight for those who have spent their working lives satisfying demand for these delicacies. What is happening in Fethiye’s fishing community and what can be done to balance the demand for fish against environmental concerns?
You’re OK if you read my article yesterday. If not, I need to summarize. For, my article yesterday and today complement each other. Yesterday I wrote about the Turkish Armed Forces, or TSK’s, evaluation regarding the struggle with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK.
The General Staff is extremely hopeful and expectant regarding efforts against PKK terror. The public is not greatly aware of it but the General Staff believes that the PKK is under huge international pressure and that a break up process has started. When carefully examining Gen. Başbuğ’s words in his latest speech you’ll understand expectations and preparations of the General Staff in this issue.
ANKARA - Rajesh Rapaka is the trainer of Turkey’s first professional Indian dance group, Nataraj Dance Group, and has been living in Turkey for many years. He is satisfied with Turkish women’s interest in Indian dances but complains about Turkish men’s prejudices against dancing
ADANA - Aytaç Durak from the Nationalist Movement Party and Mehmet Ali Bilici from the Justice and Development Party have been neck and neck in Adana. With the completion of the vote count, Durak looked to take 29.70 percent of the votes, a 20 percent increase for the MHP
Baghdad- The visit of the president of the Republic of Turkey is being perceived by the Iraqis as very important. The plan for the withdrawal of the Americans has been put into effect, new elections have taken place and the new administration has begun its work.
I have wanted to write about it for a long time but only got a chance today. I attach importance to Deniz Baykal’s Brussels visit and the newly opened office in the heart of the European Union. Most of all I attach importance to the Republican People’s Party, or CHP’s, approach to the EU.
The daily Milliyet has done a great thing. It asked the company A&G, headed by Adil Gür, to conduct a survey regarding Ergenekon. It was the perfect timing and subject to test the waters. I was interested in answers to two questions. One question being how much do you believe in Ergenekon. Take a look at how interesting the results are.
Questions in the mind of the public grow. Maybe I touch on the same points over and over but we have come to a very important stage. Explanations made by the Istanbul law society and the judicial milieu are very serious and the Ergenekon investigation and trial period bring about such a harsh criticism for the procedure applied by the prosecutor that doubts and concerns are deepening in the public opinion.
