For the first 1,277 days that I lived in Turkey, I lived on the second floor of the same building in which my in-laws lived four floors above. Generally, this was more problematic for everyone else than us. Well-meaning sympathizers would offer their condolences. But in fact, those first three and a half years were quite good. It was just our apartment we couldn’t tolerate.

Electoral lists are hanging at the offices of the district muhtars (headmen). People are asked to check whether or not they are on the lists and if they are not on the lists make an appeal by the end of office hours today. That is, Turkey has officially entered the "election period" for the March 29 local polls. The last time Turks went to the election booths was July 22, 2007.
A strong earthquake rocked the Western Aegean city of Izmir early on Friday morning leaving one person dead of a heart attack, 32 injured and schools were given a one-day holiday. The quake which struck at 12.10 pm measured 5.9 on the Richter scale and is the fourth within a week to hit the city sending large scale panic throughout the region.
