ISTANBUL - With the breakthrough of the enclosed, all-season balcony window system, the Turkish window industry has expanded to 2 million Turkish Liras.
Seeing through the global crisis, the window industry continues to grow. Currently there are approximately 1,500 firms in the industry and projections show long-term growth.
Enclosing balconies with glass allows homeowners to enjoy their balconies year-round. And despite the crisis, it’s in high demand. Glass balconies can be closed during the winter and opened in the summer. They are made of laminated or tempered glass and are impact resistant. The price of one square meter of glass ranges from 80 to 250 liras.
The glass balcony system first emerged in Ankara and then spread to Istanbul. "These systems allow balconies to be used in any season. There is no loss of view and they are not against building or municipality codes. Ankara has been a guide so far and people in Istanbul are now starting to install these systems too," said Erol Gökçek from KCS Group, which is in the industry. He also said that the window industry slowed down due to the global crisis but they are expecting the demand to reach normal levels in February.
Marble and roller systems
There are now nearly a hundred firms operating in this industry in Istanbul and these systems are in demand everywhere from the suburbs to the wealthy districts, said Gökçek.
Despite the crisis, there has been no decline in business, said İsocam Executive Mevlüt Özeren. He also said that the systems must be built by qualified and certified firms.
There are two options for this system’s installation, marble and roller, said Camcama Company Executive Savaş Algüllü. He said that the roller system was in higher demand. The most significant feature of these systems is that they are easier to keep clean and still look aesthetic and maintain balcony features. On the downside, Algüllü said that the system had less heat insulation compared to former systems, such as aluminum and PVC.
Enclosed balcony systems are popular for the moment but the market expands only through recommendations, Algüllü said. But, it will only take a short time before this system will be used as standard balcony systems in future houses, he said.
Prices may differ slightly from one company to the other and this is only natural for a fast-growing sector such as the enclosed, all-season balcony window system, Algüllü noted.
