Two “Republican rallies” in Manisa and Çanakkale, organised by the Association for Kemalist Thought (ADD), have begun. Security measures have been taken in front of Head of Parliament Bülent Arınç’s home in Manisa.

Manisa
Protestors taking part in the rally from Manisa and nearby provinces have started gathering in front of Manisa teachers’ building. 1,600 police officers from Manisa and Izmir are in charge of security at the rally. Roads on the rally itinerary have been closed off to traffic. Citizens have draped Turkish flags on their balconies in support of the rally.

Çanakkale
Protestors have started to gather at Republican Square in Çanakkale from different regions around Turkey. It has been revealed that 400 police officers will be present at the protest, organised by the Association for Kemalist thought (ADD) as well as other non-government organisations. Protestors are being admitted into the protest area after a thorough police search at seven different points.

Izmir
A similar rally has been organised in Izmir for 13th May. The protest, coinciding with Mother’s Day, is being dedicated to mothers. The rally, to be lead by the Turkish Federation of Women’s Associations, Izmir Union of Women’s Organisations and Ege University Women’s Issues Research and Enforcement Centre, will celebrate ‘The Republic, secularism and democracy’.
