It was calm early Friday morning around Taksim Square, the central district of Istanbul second only to Sultanahmet as a place for tourists to stay. The television screens showed visitors trying to drag their suitcases and policemen in yellow, white and blue helmets keeping the street entrances under control.
ANKARA - Turkey seems set to come to terms with May 1 and declare it an official holiday. Parliament’s Interior Commission raised no objections to the bill and it will be brought before Parliament next week. Past May Day events have resembled war zones more than celebratory festivities
FETHİYE - In a Fethiye beauty salon window, I saw an advertisement suggesting customers celebrate International Women’s Day, or IWD, by getting a manicure and a new hairdo. I received messages from my bank wishing me "Happy Women’s Day." And then there were the ads on TV Ğ "Buy a diamond for your darling on World Women’s Day!" I was confused. This wasn’t my idea of what this globally recognized day was supposed to be about, but perhaps I was mistaken and times had changed.
Sky-high fuel and food prices cast a shadow over the tenth birthday of the inflation-fighting European Central Bank on Monday as finance ministers flocked to Frankfurt to mark a milestone in Europe's monetary union. ECB chief Jean-Claude Trichet set the tone on the eve of the gathering, saying central banks dropped their guard on inflation at huge cost to the economy and jobs during the oil crisis of the 1970s.
