We birds were happy that the gas dispute that affected great parts of Europe was finally solved after intensive negotiations between the European Union, Russia and Ukraine.

Maybe it would be a good idea from now on that Russia and the Ukraine sign contracts of one and a half years for gas deliveries so that the renewal negotiations take place in spring and not on New Year’s Eve. Of course were that to happen Russia would lose some of its negotiating leverage that comes in the form of cold, but on the other hand it would allow the Gazprom humans to enjoy their New Year’s celebrations properly.

But the most amazing part of this story was the reaction of the EU Commission and Austria vis-a-vis Slovak intentions to reopen their nuclear power plant if the crisis was prolonged. The commission reacted very strongly by threatening Slovakia with unspecified consequences if it were to reopen its nuclear power plant that it had closed before joining the EU. Austria also voiced its concern but in a milder manner.

Gas crises
So we have here another proof of how the commission has lost its sense of reality and has no idea nor wants to have an idea of what is happening outside of its heated Brussels offices. Let us say that the gas crisis was prolonged and that Slovakia continued to freeze.

Many of its citizens, particularly the very young and the very old would start dying. The least that the Slovak government could do to protect its people is to provide heat to them even if that means reactivating the nuclear power plant. Would the imbeciles of the commission prefer to see Slovak humans dying rather than reactivating the nuclear power plant? It seems that human death is a better option for them.

The commission forgets that one of the objectives of the EU is to protect the interests of EU humans. And death does not advance their interests. The proper approach of the commission would have been to provide alternative sources of energy to Slovakia, even wood, or to shut up. It preferred neither and it should be ashamed of itself. We still hope that in similar cases in the future, the commission would act in a more responsible way.

Refrigerated beach in Dubai
And while some humans are freezing, others are trying to be cool. The world's first refrigerated beach is being created in Dubai so tourists don't burn their feet. A computer controlled system of coolant filled pipes under the sand will keep temperatures comfortable. The beach will be created next to the new Palazzo Versace hotel that will open in 2010. But are you humans well in your mind? At a moment that humanity is facing a global economic depression and millions of humans are jobless, you are making cool beaches to protect the feet of tourists. Let them wear sandals like all normal humans do when they go to a beach. Moreover, they could then use the sandals for Bush-throwing exercises. We simply cannot understand you.

But Rache Noble of Tourism Concern summarized the situation in a nice way by saying: "Dubai is like a bubble world where the things that are worrying the rest of the world like climate change, are simply ignored so people can continue destructive lifestyles." And we all know what happens to bubbles.

Ponder our thoughts dear humans for your benefit.
