Many people thought the prime minister was making a joke when he declared a while back that yelling was a form of elocution. But he was not, and indeed has since proved that he is a master of that particular form of oration - a true "yellator"! Erdoğan has been yelling at those who either challenge his absolute leadership or refuse to give him their allegiance.
JERUSALEM - Israel's military was rocked yesterday by Gaza war veterans' accounts of the killing of civilians and allegations that deep contempt for Palestinians pervaded its ranks. The soldiers, alumni of a military academy, gathered last month to discuss their experiences in the 22-day Israeli offensive that ended in January, a campaign that Palestinians and human rights groups have said warranted war crimes probes.

There was a very interesting interview broadcast on CNN Turk last week between host Taha Akyol and the head of the Turkish Central Bank, Durmus Yilmaz. At one point, the conversation turned to a photograph taken of Yilmaz' wife at the door of their house. As you may recall, that photograph was much talked about, to the point that I even wrote a column on it. Yilmaz, without flinching, had this to say about the photograph: "The picturing of those shoes outside the door was ugly." He added "At my home, I take off my shoes inside my own home. I cannot say whether or not this is a good or bad thing. It is just my life style."
