In what is being called a "jet aquittal,"internationally-acclaimed Turkish author Elif Safak has had all charges against her lifted today by an Istanbul judge. Charges against Safak had been based on the 301st article of the Turkish Penal Code, which calls for imprisonment for people accused of "insulting Turkishness, the Turkish Republic, or the Turkish Parliament." Passages from Safak's recent novel "Father and Bastard" had been at the root of charges brought against her. In the announcement of the aquittal, the judge cited insufficient evidence and lack of basis for the charges.
Turkey's whirling dervishes were added to the UN list of cultural treasures on Friday. UNESCO head Koichiro Matsuura, who announced the list of 43 traditions, said he was glad it included developing countries from Africa and elsewhere. "Despite the vitality and the strength of these cultural expressions," he said at UNESCO's Paris headquarters, "they are many that need urgent and immediate safeguarding."
An article appeared in the New York Times on Sunday titled "Turkey's growing Sex Trade Snares Many Slavic Women". The article talks about women who arrive by ferry across the black sea who end up working in "the country's growing sex trade, sometimes against their will." The article says that these women are known in Turkey as Natashas regardless of their real names, and claims that Turkey is quickly becoming the world's largest market for Slavic women due to it's booming economy and lax visa laws.
The gendarme rescued 19 handicapped people, including 4 children, who were chained and employed by force in Adana. It was revealed that the destitute handicapped people were collected from the streets and sold to the rich landowners for 500 million TL. The villagers, who were brought before the court with a gendarme minibus, claimed that they stood as protector for destitute people.
