#If İstanbulISTANBUL - It is a common belief that women over 40 are no longer attractive and that, especially during and after menopause, their bodies and characters change for good. An expert and a columnist address this issue and come up with a totally opposite conclusion. It seems that prejudices about middle-aged women are changing positively. The period between 35 and 55 is the best time in a woman’s life, says one expert.
Simple fact: If you have a nine to five job, you cannot watch daytime TV. That is a mixed blessing. On the plus side, you do not have to see "Big Brother," "Would You Be My Bride?" or its more deviant derivative, such as "Would You Be My Daughter-in-Law?" On the minus side, you are painfully devoid of the "real agenda" of the people and miss out on local celebrities.
The visit of Barack Obama, a few days after the critical municipal elections in Turkey, has been a hotly debated issue. Especially after the "short and sharp" visit of Secretary Hillary Clinton to Ankara, the discussion on the probable changes that the new American administration bring upon its relations with Turkey, has divided Turkish analysts.
ISTANBUL - Unexpected extravagance awaits you and yours this week. Think of it as a late annual bonus or a love investment. Whatever the rationale, this is your week to sink into layers of Balinese massage at home, learn Bollywood dance moves or wind things up, or down, with raspberry cheesecake covered in Turkish coffee sauce.
ISTANBUL - As the date the smoking ban comes into effect in restaurants and cafes draws nearer, the owners of such establishments are becoming increasingly worried about the effect the ban will have on an industry already suffering from the financial crisis.
Further gains in food prices would be “terrible” for the world’s poor and throw hundreds of thousands of them into starvation, the International Monetary Fund has warned. Governments throughout Asia and the Middle East are seeking to combat food inflation and avoid social unrest by curbing exports or lifting import duties on basic food staples such as rice. (UPDATED)
US State Department spokesman Sean McCormack yesterday at a press conference warned against a possible Turkish intervention against PKK terror forces in northern Iraq, saying "From our perspective, any wide-reaching intervention by Turkey in Iraq will not bring about a long term or permanent solution."
I do not believe that the Iraqi Kurds are aware of their isolation in terms of wanting Kirkuk to be tied to the north of the country. But what is sure is that in addition to Iraqi nationalists of varying ethnic and religious roots, there are also many countries which are watching developments on this subject closely.
The countdown has begun for an over-the-border military operation against the PKK in Northern Iraq. Things are definitely leaning this way. From a series of meetings which took place at the start of this week, there emerged two sentences which I thought were clarifying: "Yes, we will do it." This was the first sentence. This is what Ankara told the Turkish military. "Yes, we might do it." This was the second sentence. This is what Ankara told the American administration.
Details from a Monday meeting between Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Ali Tuygan and US Ambassador to Ankara, Ross Wilson, have reached Hurriyet. According to reports, the meeting, which concerned Turkey's growing worries over increasing PKK terror, did not in fact take place in an atmosphere of tension, contrary to press accounts until now.
Last Monday afternoon, I was in the Ankara office of Hurriyet representative Enis Berberoglu, talking with Rahsan Ecevit. Joining Rahsan was Emrehan Halici. She said that she had come to explain to us about her "alliance talks." Her other aim is clearly to "make suspicions grow" in us.
There are still 11 months in front of us. But still, Turkey's atmosphere has already become tense over the upcoming presidential elections. Everyone, including noteably the financial market, is curious about who it will be. More to the point, everyone is wondering whether someone who has a wife that wears a "turban" will move into the Cankaya Presidential Palace. Even if no one states it that way, that is the real question.
I don't know if you have noticed, but I have been careful not to write anything about the events in Semdinli until now. I only wrote words of support for Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's coollness in his policies towards the region. The Prime Minister has really behaved like a smart, forward-thinking man of government through these events. And Turkey will definitely get results from this behavior. Now, as for why I haven't written about Semdinli.....
