Truck accident kills 35 in Nigeria
James Archibald / Mar 14 (DHA) - A road accident on Sunday has left at least 35 people dead after a truck pulling a trailer filled with cattle traders and cattle lost control and ran off a bridge and plunged into a river.
The accident occurred on the Ngurore Bridge on the Yola-Ngurore road in Adamawa State in north-eastern Nigeria at around 10pm on Sunday night.
According to Buzz Nigeria, a witness who also lost two relatives in the accident, Abdu Ngurore, said about 40 people and 15 cattle died, while 30 people sustained injuries. He added that the truck was travelling south from the town of Song to the town of Yola.
Adamawa state chairman of the National Union Road Transport Workers Bello Ngurore, who had assisted in retrieving bodies from the wreckage, confirmed the accident’s cause to Buzz Nigeria.
“The driver of the trailer lost control, tumbled down the expressway, and spilled out the
passengers” Ngurore said.
In an earlier report, Nigeria’s Daily Post cited Federal Road Safety Corps Adamawa sector commander Adegoke Adetunji as saying that 15 people had been killed, but at that time there were still many others declared missing and the number of injured people was not yet confirmed.
Adetunji said the bodies of the victims had been sent to the Federal Medical Centre and the Specialists Hospital, both in Yola. He urged motorists to avoid driving in the night and stop transporting human beings and animals in the same vehicle.
