İstanbul, Mar 24 (DHA) – Six inmates serving their sentences at a prison in the western province of İzmir were caught early on Thursday while attempting to escape using a makeshift ladder.
The Buca E-Type Prison inmates, who are serving sentences for various crimes including homicide, attempted murder, robbery and carrying drugs, reportedly started their prison break attempt by breaking waterwork pipes and taps in the building, turning them into a crowbar. With it they later managed to break the lock of the door opening to a garden in the early hours of the morning.
After the inmates entered the garden, five of them climbed to the roof by using the 9-meter makeshift ladder they had created using various collected materials. However, a guard on duty spotted the inmate who remained in the garden and sounded the alarm to report the escape attempt. One of the inmates then jumped back from the roof.
Four of the inmates were subsequently apprehended on the roof following a pursuit, while the other two were caught in the garden. The inmate who jumped from the roof is reported to have broken his foot in the descent.
Meanwhile, prison authorities said the inmates would not have been able to succeed in their escape attempt due to tight security measures around the prison, where around 50 trained guard dogs and two huge walls are located.
They also added that the inmates’ ward had been under monitoring and the number of inmates in the ward had previously been reduced to 79 from 90.
