Scandal in Davos

Our chiding Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan reproached Israeli President Simon Peres in Davos yesterday.

He did this in inappropriate manner during an international meeting which was broadcasting live.

The entire world witnessed the type of politician, "who is unable to hold his anger" that rules Turkey.

Firstly, let’s make one point clear:

It may be reasonable to react against the panel’s moderator since he refused to allow Prime Minister Erdogan to speak as long as the other participants, particularly as long as Peres.

But both title of prime minister and the rules of such an international panel, which requires maximum attention and courtesy, do not allow for such a reaction.

In fact you can implement your own justice and hit the man that angers you over the head with a chair if you like, but you can forget all your rights at that point. The question being asked: "What level of discourtesy is this? How can such a reaction be shown during such a meeting?"

Even if you are right, it makes you wrong.

According to Reuters, Erdogan was angered in particular by "Peres launching a passionate defense of his country's assault on Gaza over the past month and, with a raised voice and pointed finger, and his asking what Erdogan would do if rockets were fired at Istanbul every night."

The information received at the time of writing this article was insufficient for us to fully assess the issue since we didn’t see the speech made by Peres.

Likewise, we accept that the attitude of panel moderator, Washington Post columnist David Ignatus, who allowed Peres to speak for 25 minutes while limiting Erdogan to 12 minutes, is what triggered this desperate incident.

But, those who are able to control their nerves by observing the rules are the winners in diplomacy; because those who control their nerves act not on their emotions, but from commonsense. For instance, that person, even under most severe conditions and -even if they are right-, do not make statements like, "When it comes to killing you know very well how to kill."

Because remarks can be forgotten, but such a remark can never be forgotten.

Leaving aside its not being forgotten, it is extremely damaging to our relations, despite statements saying “it would not”.

Despite all this, we hope Erdogan will be affected by the stance taken by Peres, who is matured statesman, when he called Erdogan after the Davos scandal and said, "I am a person, who has great respect towards both you and the Turkish nation. I raised my voice, since I assumed that I wasn't being heard clearly."

We hope that this will calm Erdogan’s nerves and prevent him from ruining things once again.
