Hotelier and artist finds balance as a global nomad
ISTANBUL - Czech-born Jiri Kobos has lived in 13 countries over the last 25 years with his family, managing hotels around the world and exhibiting his paintings. In his new home, Istanbul, he continues to find balance between his work as general manager of the Hyatt Regency in Taksim and as an abstract expressionist painter.
Teacher of expat teens ’lands’ en NASA institute
ISTANBUL - A historian and social anthropologist by training who has spent a quarter of her life as an expat, Sema Alpayta is this year's only Turkish participant in NASA's Aerospace Institute taking place later this month. She hopes to use her experience to help enrich the lives of the expatriate teenagers she teaches in Istanbul as well as the community.

When I started my journalistic career some decades ago in what was then known as the Turkish Daily News, one of the first shocks I had (and believe me there were many) was to discover that at the end of the year, the paper found a fortuneteller and asked him to predict the new year for the readers.

Turkey has reached a point that even during the bayram prayers people are killing each other. When the murderer realizes that he is watched by the grand son of the victim he kills him as well. During the bayram holiday in Istanbul each day murders have been committed. We don’t know how many were killed. Five, 10 people? Certain killings are not even in the media. Afterward, newspapers are giving the accounts of the murders in several of their pages.
Turk AKP says its defense is "very strong," rules out early election
AKP is set to defend itself in the closure case by saying the chief prosecutor prepared the indictment careless and disorderly, and failed to put concrete proofs, as the Turkish prime minister ruled out possibility of early election. Minister Tayyip Erdogan told MPs on Tuesday their defense is very strong and ruled out the possibility of an early election. Erdogan also said they will not ask the court for additional time in defense process. (UPDATED)
