ANKARA - Turkish ballet dancer Kadir Okurer, the winner of the 1st Istanbul International Ballet Competition last year, has been invited to visit leading ballet companies abroad. He will represent Turkey at one of the world’s most important ballet organizations in New York from April 18 and 24.

Young Turkish ballet dancer Kadir Okurer will represent Turkey at one of the world’s most important ballet organizations, the New York Youth America Grand Prix Competition.

The dancer, who was the winner of the 1st Istanbul International Ballet Competition, has been invited to the competition by the organizers without being exposed to elimination process.

Okurer, 18, is the pride of Turkish ballet, winning the largest international organization in Turkey in the field of ballet. The dancer, who won the Grand Prix Award in the Istanbul International Ballet Competition, which was held last year for the first time by the State Opera and Ballet General Directorate as part of the 2010 European Capital of Culture, has been invited by leading ballet companies abroad.

Upon the invitation of Bordeaux Ballet Director Charles Jude, Okurer went to France last year in December and performed there for two months. He also drew attention of the officials from the New York Youth America Grand Prix Ballet Competition after his success in Istanbul, and invited by the competition committee to the finals without entering DVD elections and eliminations. He will leave Turkey for New York on April 15 and represent the country in the competition from April 18 and 24.

Okurer will be accompanied by his trainer ArmaÄŸan Davran, ballet counselor and trainer at the Ankara State Opera and Ballet Art Counselor. The ballet dancer will join the competition with supports from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

Speaking to the Anatolia news agency, Okurer, one of the members of the Ankara State Opera and Ballet, said before the international competition in Istanbul, his path crossed with the gold medal winner Turkish ballet Serhat Güdül, who is known as the "Flying Turk."

Two dance variations
He said they were working hard with Güdül for the competition in New York. "I will join the competition with two dance variations, one is classical and the other is modern."

He said he would perform famous choreographer Young Soon Hue’s choreography "Business Man," and that on stage he would be a businessman wearing a suit and carrying portfolio. In the field of classical ballet, Okurer will perform "Flame de Paris," which brought him an award in the finals of the 1st Istanbul International Ballet Competition. "My biggest goal is to win a medal in this competition. For good luck, I will wear the costume that Güdül was wearing at a competition in Helsinki and won a medal," he said.

Okurer said when he was 16 he also won the third prize at an international ballet competition in Varna. "I will represent Turkey in the best way and I will do my best to return Turkey with a medal," he said.

If he places in the competition, Okurer will also perform at the gala night titled "Future’s Stars Together with Today’s Stars" on April 22 with artists from the most important European and American groups. Four years ago, Turkish ballet dancer Gözde Özgür competed at the New York Youth America Grand Prix. Being accepted by the Munich Ballet, Ozgür is still working for the ballet company as the only Turkish artist.
