SİVAS - As part of the International Youth Film Production Workshop, a joint project by Turkey and the United States, 12 young people with technical education in film and documentary-making in Sivas started shooting films.

New York University, or NYU, communications department member and project manager Associate Professor Nefin Dinç provided information about the workshop at a press conference held Friday at the Sivas Municipality Youth Culture Center. She said the project, prepared by the NYU and Atlantic Film Company, and supported by the U.S. secretary of state, was realized in the Turkish cities of Sivas, Edirne, Konya, Hayat, Mardin and Artvin.

Dinç said the project’s films would be on "democracy, human rights, women’s rights and cultural diversity," adding that they chose the Anatolian city of Sivas because it had an interesting history and interesting cultural mosaics.

She said the 12 students involved in the project were given education on short filmmaking. She said preparations for film productions in the city would be completed in July, and three films would be made in Sivas. "A total of 18 films will be made in six different cities. They will be shown in Ankara, Istanbul and Diyarbakır as well as Sivas. The films will also be screened at local festivals to be organized in districts around NYU, and in the festivals in New York, Boston and Washington where the Turkish population is high," she said.

Dinç also added that a person from each filmmaking group would participate in short-length film production training in NYU.
