KONYA - A man in the central Anatolian province of Konya started collecting bait worms to use in his fishing excursions but soon transformed the practice into a profitable business, tripling his monthly income.
Ali Özdemir from Konya’s Seydişehir district said he earns minimum wage, which is 527 Turkish Liras a month, from his job at a private company and in his spare time he enjoyed fishing. Before going fishing, he dug into dirt to collect worms as bait. After a while, his fellow fishermen asked for some of the worms, and eventually he started selling 100 worms for 10 liras.
He said he started to get orders from fishermen at nearby lakes, with an order of 5,000 worms coming from the neighboring Beyşehir district. "At first, I was collecting the worms myself, but now my children help me out," he said.
Özdemir said worms were a preferred type of bait for fishermen, and most did not have the time to dig for the worms. "When they see it for sale, they stop and pay for it," he said. He sells between 300 and 400 worms a day and said he earns twice as much money selling worms as he earns from his regular job.
