The Turkish chapter of the World Wildlife Federation (WWF) has started up a water conservation campaign slated to last the entire year. With the slogan of "Suyumuza sahip cikalim," or "Let's take care of our water," the campaign was introduced by the head of WWF-Turkey, Dr.Filiz Demirayak, who warned "Global warming is a threat for Turkey.
We should be concerned by the current spring-like weather conditions we are experiencing. Turkey is quickly heading towards being water impoverished. Every drop of water running from our taps today is valuable. Let's take care of our water."
Speaking at a press conference yesterday at Istanbul's Swisshotel, Dr.Demirayak offered statistics on Turkey's water useage:
"In the past 40 years, Turkey has used up 1 million 300 thousand hectares of waterlands, equal to the size of 3 Van Lakes. 50% of our water resources have disappeared....Turkey is not a country rich in water resources....Water may in the future be a reason for war between countries."
