ANKARA - New revisions to Turkish regulations state that, if approved by a judge, divorced women may use their former husband’s last names and children born out of wedlock should take the father’s last name if it is known, otherwise they should use their mother’s name.

According to the last name regulations printed in Turkey’s Official Gazette last week, a woman may continue to use her former husband’s last name if she is granted permission by a judge. The regulation’s 19th article, which forbids the use of a former husband’s last name, has been revised to read: "In the circumstance of divorce, the woman takes back her maiden name. However, if the judge grants permission to carry on with the divorced husband’s last name, she may continue with the divorced husband’s last name."

Also revised was Article 15, which applies to the registration of children outside of wedlock. The previous regulation stated if the father was known, the child took the father’s last name. If he is not known, the child takes the mother’s last name. If the father were to come forward later or if there was a court order to do so, the child could also take the father’s last name. "Children to be born during or within 300 days after the marriage’s end take the last name of their father. Children born out of wedlock take the last name of their mother. However, if the mother has two last names due to a previous marriage, the child takes her maiden name.
