ISTANBUL - An amazing view, beautiful terrace, top-floor privacy, luxury interior and private entrance are some of a penthouse’s best characteristics. For some, the main attraction of a penthouse is simply the complete privacy from any overhead disturbance.
In much of the West, penthouses are just the top floor of a building. But in the United States, penthouses are treated much differently than an ordinary top floor. Many architects say a penthouse has a private entrance or an elevator separated from the rest of the building. And it must be a luxury apartment. Most penthouses include a huge terrace with a garden.
In Turkey, some construction companies define a penthouse differently. For one thing, they are not always on the top floor. Another type similar to a penthouse is called a "loft," which is an apartment or duplex with an open floor plan just below the roof. So if the top floor has a terrace, it is called penthouse. If the top floor is an open space it is called loft.
"Apartments with terraces are usually called terrace-floor apartments. They generally offer wide-angle, magical views and are ideal for growing plants. But such a high quality home brings burdens too. For instance, heating and insulation during the winter may be a problem in terrace-floor apartments. The walk up stairs to a terrace flat may not be a problem if you are young. But in time, staircases invite trouble," said Ebru Öz, a real estate agent.
