ISTANBUL-Under the theme, "Hello to a New Beyoğlu," a reception for the Beyoğlu Beautification and Protection Foundation was held Wednesday.

Nizam Hışım, the foundation’s chairman, speaking at the reception at Beyoğlu’s Pera Museum, said the members of the foundation aim to embellish, preserve and develop Istanbul’s historic Beyoğlu district.

Established in 1985, the 150-member foundation works to develop the district while preserving its historic beauty.

Activities to gain pace

"We are planning on organizing outdoor festivals, greening İstiklal Street and its side streets, developing it as a center for cinema, organizing galas, and shooting a series about Beyoğlu and its history. These are just a few of the activities we want to carry out," Hışım said. He also thanked Beyoğlu Mayor Ahmet Misbah Demircan for his support of the foundation.

A documentary about Vitali Hakko, the founder of Vakko, one of the biggest Turkish fashion brands, was shown at the reception. Vakko opened its first branch in Beyoğlu in 1962 and was the biggest store in the district at that time, but it closed in 2006. After the screening, artists, designers and coworkers shared their memories with Hakko.
