İZMİR - In order to raise awareness on the problems of refugees, a Turkish-based refugee organization has launched the "Kayıki Movement."

On Sunday, members of the Refugee Solidarity Association, or Mülteci-Der, handed out postcards and promotional CDs in İzmir and three Greek cities, voicing the slogan of "Stop deaths in the Aegean, we are all in the same boat."

Taner Kılıç, the chairman of Mülteci-Der, said the Aegean has become a "sea of death" recently.

"Refugees journey to find a safe place and life and circumstances they find have become more dire every day," said Kılıç. "The Aegean, which links two countries’ people, has become a ’sea of death.’ After difficult journeys, the refugees’ dead bodies hit the shores."

International group

Kılıç said Turkish, Greek, Austrian and German artists, academics and activists met in a couple of occasions to form the group "Kayıki."

"This group prepared postcards and 45-second films to be shown on television and on the Internet," said Kılıç, adding that the multilingual Web site www.kayiki.net was open for further information. "Those works can be viewed on the Web site in seven languages." After speeches, there was a short theater play by the Yenikapı Theater Group.
