Interesting dialogues took place yesterday in Ankara with presidential candidate Abdullah Gul making the rounds to try and shore up support for his controversial candidacy for the office that Ataturk once held.

Meeting with independent MP Kamer Genc from Tunceli, Gul heard from Genc a reiteration of the fears that Gul wanted a "sharia state," with Genc telling Gul that "Gul's wife, with her turban, makes Turkey resemble an Arab state." Genc also warned Gul not to "fill Cankaya Presidential Palace with black-scarved people pretending to be secular."

Gul's response to Genc's words of warning was as follows: "I also want a modern democratic country. In a democratic state, the path must be cleared for a structure in which every faction can live in equality and comfort. Also, most of my wife's friends do not wear turbans."
