Vural Oger, an ethnically Turkish MP representing Germany in the European Parliament, has said that the tension between the EU and Turkey has provoked a rise in nationalism in Turkey. Speaking yesterday, in the wake of the shocking killings in Malatya, Oger noted that EU policies have pushed Turkey's bourgeoisie to become more nationalist, while Turkey's masses have become more Islamic.

Said Oger "The EU needs to see this, and should try to understand Turkey. It must try to interpret correctly this worrisome situation." Oger stressed that the ambigious stance taken by the EU towards Turkey was having a serious affect on Turkish perspectives towards the EU.

Meanwhile, yesterday in Ankara, embassy officials from EU countries came together for an urgent meeting regarding the deaths this week of the 3 men who had been working distributing and printing Bibles in Malatya.
