British telecommunication giant Vodafone won the bid for Turkey's second-biggest mobile telephone operator, Telsim, in a televised auction – the bid closed at $4.55 billion. Vodafone won the bid over Kuwait's Mobile Telecommunications Company (MTC), which stopped short at $4.53 billion.
The other participants were Egypt's Orascom, Russia's Sistema and Etisalat and Emaar Properties of the United Arab Emirates.
Telsim has 9.7 million subscribers and controls about 25% of the local market, according to company statistics, and employs 2,000 people.
