According to the temporary results of “Household Budget Survey,” conducted by the State Statistics Institute (DIE), Turkish people living in cities spend their income mostly for housing expenses such as rent. On the other hand, villagers spend their income mostly for food. However the same survey revealed that city dwellers increased their housing spending by reducing their food expenses. From 1994 to 2002 people living in cities reduced the share of food expenditures in their income from 28% to 23.9%, while housing expenses rose from 24.8% to 29.2% of their income.
