BODRUM - Municipal officials in Bodrum’s Güllük district have started to knock down buildings constructed on a bay by a real-estate broker who did not have the proper permits.

The owner of the buildings said the move was unfair since no one had warned him of the decision to raze the structures. İlyas Ergül had been using land that belongs to the Treasury for 40 years, building property worth more than 500,000 Turkish Liras there. Officials from the local governor’s office and municipality visited the location last week and warned Ergül to leave.

Demolition teams and gendarmerie forces were dispatched to the property Tuesday as Ergül was still using the buildings, including a pier, a bar and a restaurant. Officials said they were executing a decision made by the municipal council in 1987.

"Where was the state for 40 years?" Ergül shouted at gendarmerie officials while watching his investments be destroyed. "Those who said ’do it,’ now come to destroy it. What should I do, should I commit suicide?"

Ergül was taken into custody by the gendarmerie to keep him from hurting himself. They also seized a gun registered to him. Ergül will remain in custody until the demolition has been completed, officials said.

Meanwhile, Bodrum Citizen Initiative spokesman Ayhan Karahan, who drew attention to the un-permitted development by holding a protest on the property last week, said the case was an example of double standards.

"MNG Holding filled in Pina Peninsula 17 months ago," he said. "It was fined 85,000 liras, paid it, and has not removed a single stone since," he said, arguing that the state is not "strong enough to confront a big company such as MNG."
