University defends rector in custody

KONYA - Konya Selçuk University has come out in defense of its rector, Professor Süleyman Okudan, who was taken into custody Monday morning, accusing the media of slander.

"The press executes the rector and the university with extreme prejudice," said in a written statement from the university yesterday.

Thirty people, including Okudan, were detained under the third wave of operations launched against the private Okyanus Companies Group, based in Turkey's central province of Konya's, last Monday. Police said Okudan was accused of being the leader of a criminal gang.

Innocent until proven guilty
"Although there is no arrest or conviction decision given by the court about the suspects, the press published unjust, grave and degrading claims about those take into custody," said the University’s senate. "Our university is executed with extreme prejudice in the name of our rector. Those claims harm both the persons and institutions," said the statement.

"Selçuk University is one or the more respected education institutions in Turkey. Unjust and extreme claims published by the press, hurt and saddened our university, including its students, academic and administrative personnel," continued the statement.

The university also said they had faith in the justice system. "Our rector has contributed in establishing a peaceful and safe atmosphere in the university," said the statement and called on the press to be more sensitive in this issue.
