ISTANBUL - United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has called on all UN member-states to support the second annual Alliance of Civilizations, which will be held in Istanbul on April 6 -7.

During his speech at the 192-member UN General Assembly meeting Monday, Ban said he would participate at the forum in Istanbul.

The UN initiative is important for developing tolerance and mutual understanding and plays an important role for nations and people to live in peace, Ban said.

He said the organization was created to stand against social tension, violence and ideologies that use some cultures as scapegoats.

"The Alliance of Civilizations can be counted as ’pre-emptive diplomacy,’" Ban said.

The Alliance of Civilizations is an international initiative that aims to advance intercultural understanding. The forum serves to forge partnerships between diverse communities and strengthen associations between global leaders, heads of international organizations, corporations, the media, civil society and youth groups.

The Turkish government will host the conference, which was last held in January 2008 in Madrid. Ban, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Spanish President JosŽ Luis Rodr’guez Zapatero, the UN Secretary-General's high representative for the Alliance of Civilizations, President Jorge Sampaio, and other high-ranking political leaders will attend.
