A group of 30 tourists from the Ukraine were stopped yesterday in Istanbul on the way from the airport to their hotels by 6 thieves posing as police on the TEM freeway. The tourists, who had boarded a bus after leaving Istanbul's Sabiha Gokcen Airport, were pulled to the side of the road at the entrance to the TEM freeway yesterday afternoon.
Black car with siren on top
Â
3 men in a black "Sahin" model car with a siren on top indicated to the bus that it had to pull over, and told passengers and the driver that they were ordered to carry out a search of the bus. The men, who were armed, then carried out a passport control, and ordered the Ukranian pilot of the chartered flight, who was also on the bus, to step off the bus, telling passengers that they were arresting him.Â

Pilot kidnapped
Â
The 3 armed men left with the Ukranian pilot in their car, followed by a mini van containing 3 other armed membesr of the gang. Though it wasn't clear at that pont why the pilot had been kidnapped, Turkish police who were able to stop and capture the gang members discovered a large bag of cash in the car that had been carrying the pilot. The amount of cash contained in the bag was so large-some police sources say it was around 190 thousand dollars-that the police demanded an explanation from the pilot as to whom the money belonged. The pilot however was not able to say. Adding to the mysterious circumstances surrounding the incident, police sources also report that two of the men involved in the kidnapping appear to have ties to the real police force.
