Two Turkish soldiers were killed and nine others were injured in an armed attack carried out by outlawed PKK separatists in an eastern province of Turkey. Four PKK separatists were killed Wednesday in a security operation to catch the perpetrators, the sources said. (UPDATED)

Two Turkish soldiers in a military vehicle were killed and nine others were injured in an armed attack carried out by outlawed PKK separatists in the Kigi district of the eastern province of Bingol, Turkish news agencies reported.

Irfan Balkanoglu, governor of the province, said the two soldiers had been seriously injured in an ambush while on their way to secure the construction site of a dam in Kigi.

They were rushed to hospital by helicopter, but could not be saved, he added.

Four PKK separatists were killed Wednesday by Turkish security forces in Kigi in an operation launched to track down the group, who attacked the security forces and killed two soldiers. 

Security forces also seized rifles, rocket projectiles, hand grenades and ammunition with the terrorists. Air-backed operation is still under way in the region, authorities told Anatolian Agency.

The PKK is listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey as well as the most of the international community, including the U.S. and the EU.
