Two Turkish nationals have been kidnapped in eastern Afghanistan along with their Afghan driver and translator, while Turkish foreign minister arrived in the country on Saturday. (UPDATED)

Turkish Foreign Ministry confirmed the kidnappings and said the incident happened two days ago.

"They were working on a communication project," Foreign Ministry Burak Ozugergin said, Anatolian Agency reported. Ozugergin, however didn't reveal their identities citing security concerns, the AA added.

 

Afghanistan's eastern province of Khost's governor Arsala Jamal had earlier said the group had been contracted to erect a radio mast in the Tani district, on the border with Pakistan, and were captured while they were driving to the town of Khost from the area.

There had been no contact from the abductors who were unknown, he said. Â

 

A spokesman for the insurgent Taliban, which has carried out several kidnappings for ransom or to put political pressure on the authorities, said it was not responsible for the abduction and blamed bandits, AFP reported.

 

TURKISH FM IN THE COUNTRY

Turkey’s Foreign Minister Ali Babacan has arrived in Afghanistan on Saturday for a pre-planned visit and the issue is placed in his agenda.

 

Babacan will be received by the Afghan President Hamid Karzai and also will hold talks with the Afghan Foreign Minister Rangin Dadfar Spanta and other Afghan ministers.

 

Security has plummeted in Afghanistan with attacks from Taliban and other insurgents on the rise and criminals kidnapping dozens of Afghans and foreign nationals, most often for ransom.

Two Bangladeshi development workers were kidnapped in the central province of Ghazni on Friday, according to their employer, the Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee (BRAC).
