Two strong earthquakes rocked Greece's Peloponnese peninsula within hours of each other on Saturday, but there were no reports of casualties or damage, the National Observatory of Athens said.

The first quake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale struck at 5:57 am (0857 GMT) and its epicenter was located at some 270 kilometers (168 miles) south of Athens, the observatory said.   Â

The second quake, with the same epicenter, measured 5.9 and was timed at 2:36 pm (1136 GMT).

Observatory seismologist Marios Papanikolaou told AFP the quakes were thought to be aftershocks from the 6.5 magnitude quake which occurred in the same area off Methoni on February 14.

Greece experiences more seismic activity than any other country in Europe, accounting for half of the continents recorded quakes.
