Two soldiers and a Kurdish militant were killed on Monday in the southeast of Turkey after clashes broke out near to Van and Agri province. Operations were continuing along the Iran and Iraq border, and fighting was ongoing in the region, said a senior military official on Monday. "Two soldiers and one PKK member were killed near the border of Van and Agri provinces when fighting broke out in the area," added the official on condition of anonymity. "Large-scale operations are underway at several points across the southeast, and clashes are erupting from time to time ... Because fighting continues, it is not yet certain how many PKK have been killed. The number is likely to rise," he said The fighting has intensified in recent months, as Turkish officials claim that members of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) are crossing over the border from Iraq into Turkey to wage terrorist attacks, following the end of a unilateral ceasefire in June 2004.
