Two men were convicted on Friday for the "honor killing" of their sister, one man was sentenced to life imprisonment and the other got up to more than 11 years. The two men shot their sister, Güldünya Tören, 22, last year in a hospital bed, while she was recovering from an earlier gun attack that had been administered by themselves. Tören, who was being punished by her brothers for having a child out of wedlock, died one day after the shooting incident in an Istanbul hospital.

Tören had been shot at in the street by her brothers and was taken to hospital to recover. She was in the hospital's intensive care unit with several injuries that were sustained in the first attack, when her brothers, pretending to be visitors, shot her in the head, reports said.

Tören had reportedly fled her hometown of Bitlis in the southeast of Turkey and arrived in Istanbul to escape her family after becoming pregnant. She was given shelter in the home of an imam in Istanbul, where she gave birth to a baby boy. One of her brothers lured her into the street, pretending that he had come to take her to her aunt's house, while the second shot at her.

With Turkey's ambitions to join the EU, changes in the Turkish penal code have been made with regards to honor killings and tougher sentences are to be handed down to family members who kill, force or encourage another member to kill a relative believed to have disgraced the family.
