The ruling AKP, which promised the opposition Anavatan that in return for support for its Constitutional draft bill (proposing a consitutional change that would allow direct election of the president) it would not bring the referendum law to the agenda, has changed its decision.
If the proposal which now awaits President Ahmet Necdet Sezer's approval is accepted, there will two choices Turkish people are making at the ballot boxes on July 22, one being for who they want to see as MP, and one being for president.
Though the AKP had promised the Anavatan opposition members yesterday morning that they would not "shorten the referendum time period," it went back on its word this morning. A proposal to shorten the referendum period from 120 days to 45 days was presented this morning in the Turkish Parliament, and will be discussed today.
