ANTALYA - Concerned about protecting themselves from the sun, Chinese women do not think of Antalya as a holiday destination during summer months.
Thermal hot springs resorts in the region are a good alternative for Chinese tourists, says Koray Akgüloğlu, chairman of Turkey-China Businessmen Friendship and Cooperation Foundation.
Chinese women do not visit Antalya on summer holidays because they do not want to get a tan, according to the chairman of the Turkey-China Businessmen Friendship and Cooperation Foundation, or TUCİAD.
"However, the Mediterranean city features much more than just sea, sun and sand. It offers a different holiday for Chinese tourists with the thermal hot springs resorts abundant in the region," said Koray Akgüloğlu, speaking in Antalya during a seminar at Akdeniz University’s Faculty of Economics.
Akgüloğlu said Chinese women often use umbrellas even in sunny weather to prevent tanning. He said it was a common attitude in China that people who work outdoors are villagers and therefore it is unusual to see Chinese people at the beach.
"Chinese women use special soaps and wear long-sleeved clothes to make their skin lighter. For this reason, Antalya tourism is not of interest to these women. However, thermal hot springs resorts in the inner districts have the potential to attract Chinese tourists. Tourism projects focusing on this will not only reveal the historic values of Antalya as an attraction, commonly known for its summer tourism, but will also increase foreign currency input by spurring winter tourism," he said.
