Reuters news agency reported, citing energy ministry sources, that electricity production was halted at three power stations due to the cut in gas supplies. Hamitabat, Ambarli and Bursa power stations had shut down production, Reuters claimed.

Electricity production was cut by 50 percent at Hamitabat power station, the DHA also reported citing Abdulrezzak Katircioglu, the general manager of the station.

"As of this morning, the power station's 1200 megawatt production capacity has been reduced to 600 megawatt due to the reduction in the natural gas flow," DHA quoted Katircioglu as saying.

On Tuesday, Russian gas supplies coming via Ukraine to Turkey were completely cut, although some supplies are still coming via a pipeline which passes directly from Russia under the Black Sea.

Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Greece, Italy, Macedonia, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia and Slovenia all reported a halt in Russian gas shipments by Wednesday. Others — including Austria, France, Germany, Hungary and Poland — reported substantial drops in supplies.Â
