The Supreme Court accused the government last week of creating a "judiciary controlled by an executive body." The AKP slammed the statement saying the high courts had compromised their neutrality and independence with political statements. The exchange of harsh statements signaled a new phase in the conflict between the AKP government, who is under pressure from the closure case, and the judiciary. The nationalist MHP has called the president to step in to resolve the conflict.

Everybody should be careful to avoid such debates to widen the extent that could hurt "the basic principles of our constitution, national interest and reputation, national unity and integrity, as well as economic and political stability," Gul said in a statement posted on the website of the presidency.

"I would like to underline that we should not let both political and legal debates over the developments in our country, at a time when political, economic and security issues emerge both in global and regional aspects, erode our stability, reputation and achievements that were won with the sacrifices of our nation, and to result irreparable injuries in Turkey's strategic interests and objectives," he said.

Gul also added he held discussions with the political parties in the parliament as well as non-governmental organizations in recent months, adding his contacts continue and will continue. ANKA news agency reported Gerceker told Gul the draft reform for the judicial system should be withdrawn.

The Turkish government's spokesman welcomed Gul's move to resolve the conflict. Deputy Prime Minister and government spokesman Cemil Cicek said he does not know the details of the meeting between Gul and Hasan Gerceker, the chairman of the Supreme Court, but he thinks it’s beneficial.
