Turkish President Abdullah Gul approved the bill easing the headscarf ban on universities on Friday, saying he concluded that the bill aims "to enforce the equality principal and the education right".
"Some of our citizens' concerns are understandable and the arrangement to ease those concerns must be put in place. Mr. President believes that maximum sensitivity and effort should be made in order to ease these concerns", the statement on the presidential website.
Gul "did not find the amendments in contradiction with the general principles of law, the basic tenets of the republic and procedural rules governing constitutional amendments,"Â the statement said.
The main opposition party has said it will ask the Constitutional Court to quash the law, which parliament approved on Feb. 9. Â
