Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Sarp Border Gate, Erdogan said the modernized border pass would strengthen the friendship between the two nations, and it would boost trade and tourism.

"This border, which had kept our nations apart from each other for 70 years, turned into a bridge friendship after Georgia's independence," Erdogan said.

Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili also attended the ceremony.

The two leaders held a bilateral meeting earlier in the day in Batumi, Georgia.
