ANKARA - Faced with harsh criticism of his party’s alleged connections with the corrupt Lighthouse e.V. charity organization in Germany, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan yesterday struck back by accusing his main political rivals of embezzlement.

Erdoğan charged the Republican People’s Party, or CHP, with embezzling nearly 1 million Turkish Liras.

"You will not be able to cast a slur on the AK Party [the Justice and Development Party, or AKP]. We have nothing to do with Lighthouse e.V. We are comfortable on this issue," Erdoğan said in the central Anatolian town of Kayseri.

"Those whose pasts are dark cannot, of course, accept this. [CHP leader Deniz] Baykal, who is trying to defame us, is trying to teach me civility. The Constitutional Court found you and your party guilty, Mr. Baykal. You should first answer for 1 million liras granted by the Treasury. Where did you spend it? " Erdoğan added.

Regarding the controversy over a law allowing foreign companies to remove landmines on the Syrian border, Erdoğan accused the opposition of misinforming the public. "I congratulate the imagination of the opposition.

They can even cook omelets without eggs," he said, rejecting claims that the area to be cleared will be given to an Israeli company to use for 44 years.
