Turkish and Japanese clash over anti-corruption clause attached to a donation offered by the Japanese to build an archeological museum in Turkey. Turkish legislators rejected the $3 million donation because they were insulted by the anti-corruption clause attached to the contribution agreement.

The clause specified that “The Japanese government states that it assumes the Turkish Republic will take the necessary measures to prevent any offer that could be construed as a bribe, a gift or payment or benefit in kind,” Turkish parliamentarian Mehmet Dulger said in a statement to the semi-official Anatolia news agency.

Dulger, president of the Turkish Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Commission, was one of several legislators insulted by the demand: “If it’s $300 million or $3 billion, let it go. Let that money sink,” he said. “How could we sign this?”
