"Approving of the Kyoto Protocol is important and needed to be able to participate in the studies after 2012," Cicek replied when a question regarding the timing of the decision's being late for the protocol was asked.

The Kyoto Protocol binds 37 developed nations to cut greenhouse gas emissions by an average of five percent below 1990 levels by 2008-2012.

Turkey had previously rejected signing the United Nation’s protocol on global warming saying it needed to complete its industrial development first. But the country is under pressure from the European Union to improve environmental standards.
