SOFIA - Two Turkish directors have won awards at the Sofia International Film Festival, Bulgaria’s most important international film event. Özkan Alper received the Best Director Award for his Turkish-German joint production film "Autumn," and Hüseyin Karabey won the Best Balkan Film Award for his "My Marlon and Brando."
Alper’s "Autumn" was defined as "an emotional and effective cinema journey from life to death." He received 1,000 euros and a certificate.
At a news conference held at the festival, Alper said that as a young director, his goal was to make cinema but not only
film. "My first artistic film ’Autumn’ has received awards in different national and international festivals, which really motivates me," he said. "I am currently working on a new film project that will be done in a few months."
Karabey, who won for his Turkish-Dutch joint production film "My Marlon and Brando," which was chosen among seven others in the Balkan category, was regarded as the best young Turkish talent. He previously won at the Sarajevo and Tribeca film festivals.
As part of the festival, Turkish director Yeşim Ustaoğlu’s "Pandora’s Box," Semih Kaplanoğlu’s "Milk," Derviş Zaim’s "Dot" and Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s "Three Monkeys" were also shown and won appreciation from the audiences and the jury. The jury led director Doror Zahavi’s Israeli-German production film "For My Father" as the best film.
