Turkish Cypriot spokesman says UN official to visit Cyprus

Lynn Pascoe, the United Nations Under-Secretary General for Political Affairs, is expected to visit the ethnically divided island on June 17, Hasan Ercakica, spokesman of Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, said on Wednesday, the Anatolian Agency reported.

Ercakica said Pascoe's agenda have not been certain yet, adding the UN was determined to monitor the process in Cyprus, and Pascoe would visit the island within that scope, the agency added.Â

Ercakica also said the two leaders in the island would meet in the second half of June and make several assessments about the process.

He also said the Greek Cypriot obstacle before Financial Assistance Regulation for Turkish Cypriots was eliminated, and this was a very positive development, adding the real contribution to the solution in the island would be to lift isolation over Turkish Cypriots.

Greek Cypriots dropped on Wednesday legal action to block part of an EU financial aid package which was approved by the EU in 2006, an aid deal of 259 million euros ($402 million) for the Turkish Cypriot community.

The package had been proposed by the European Commission in 2004 and vetoed by the Greek Cypriots till 2006.

Ercakica said the Financial Assistance Regulation should rapidly be implemented, and added the Direct Trade Regulation should also be fulfilled.
