Turkish automotive exports fell 56 percent to hit a 3-year low of $882 million in January 2009 compared to the same month of 2008, according to the figures released by Uludag Exporters' Association on Tuesday.

Exports for Turkey’s automotive sector recorded nearly $2 billion in the same term of 2008.

 

Turkey exported automotive products to 11 free zones as well as 128 countries and autonomous regions in January, the figures showed, with France topping the list with exports of $155.1 million followed by Germany, Italy, Britain and Belgium.

 

Turkish exports of motor vehicles slumped by more than two- thirds in the first half of January as consumer demand fell and the export market crumbled,Âthe Auto Distributors’ Association earlier announced.

Turkey exported automotive products to Palestine, Djibouti, Gabon, Jamaica, Mauritania, Chad, the Maldive Islands, Trinidad and Tobago, North Korea and Liberia for the first time.

 

Turkey's three main automotive exporters, including Tofas, a joint venture between Italy's Fiat and local group Koc, Ford Otosan, a joint venture between Koc and struggling U.S. carmaker Ford, and Oyak Renault, a joint venture of Renault and Turkey's Oyak, have suspended production temporarily during recent months.
