Turkish army strikes PKK targets in northern Iraq

Turkish warplanes on Tuesday conducted air strikes against PKK bases on Mount Qandil in nothern Iraq, the Turkish army announced on its official website. (UPDATED)

The raid targeted a large cave used by the PKK as a base, in which  30-40 outlawed separatists take refuge, the military said. 

"Most of those terrorists outside the cave along with an unspecified number inside were killed," it said.

A separate attack took place in the Zap region of northern Iraq as well, the military added.

Turkey, provided with intelligence by the United States, has stepped up military action against the PKK since December.

The PKK is listed as a terrorist group by much of the international community including the U.S. and the EU. Turkey has been carrying out several air strikes and a week-long ground incursion into northern Iraq in February, where more than 2,000 PKK terrorists take refuge.
